The Sul Ross Lobos came roaring back in the last game of a double header Saturday to drop the University of Texas, El Paso Miners 7-2. The Lobos had suffered loss es at the hands of Southwest Conference powerhouse Texas Tech University during the week and dropped three to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Miners in action Friday and Saturday. In the final contest Satur day, the Lobos started out shaky with Sul Ross pitcher Johnny Guerrero and the Lobos went to work. From the second inning on, Guerrero and the Lobo defense allowed only two hits, strand ing seven Miner base runners and turning double plays in both the fifth and sixth innings. Offensively, the Lobos finally caught fire in the second inning when catcher Bobby Jarrett sliced a single over the UTEP infield. That broke the Miner's pitching magic, and John Bowman, Judd Ryan, Jeff Pannell and Wade West all got on base on walks. Both Pannell and West picked up RBIs via the base-on-balls which left the bases loaded for Sul Ross shortstop Brett Parker. Behind on the count 1-2, Parker drove the next pitch deep against the Kokernot Field wall, picking up two more Lobo runs and stretching the lead to 5-2 in favor of Sul Ross. The Lobo defense played near-perfect ball the rest of the game. Parker handled 10 balls from his shortstop position, picking up three outs and seven assists. The only Lobo error was quickly erased when Guerrero led UTEP slugger Roger Smith into grounding out to Parker with the bases loaded. Offensively, the Lobos were led by Jarrett’s three for four at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. Parker went two for three, including a single, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter Chuck Gomez went two for four with a RBI. The Lobos return to action at Kobernot Field Friday against Central Arizona State University in a 7:30 p.m. game. Over the spring break next week, the Lobos will be on the road against the University of Texas at Arlington, Jarvis Christian College, Austin College and Dallas Baptist College. On April 5, the Lobos begin a home stand that will see them at Kokernot Field for four consecutive Friday- Saturday doubleheaders. O-U-T—Lobo first baseman, Jeff Pannell, completes an out against the UTEP Miners in Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Kokernot Field. The Lobos gained strength and poise through the first game of the day and roared back for a 7-2 win in the second game of the double header.
