day today inIt's blarneyToday is the day! Ail you Irishmen and those who might like to be-in fact, anyone out there with even just a wee bit o’ the blarney in their blood--it's time for the wearin’ o’ the green. It’s time to grab all that green garb from the closet and turn out in your finest Irish finery for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Venice, sponsored by the Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick. With a theme, “Blarney comes to Venice,’’ this year’s parade will get off to a rousing start at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) and promises to be bigger and better than ever, with 89 units participating in the annual salute to the land of shamrocks and shillelaghs.THERE WILL be bands, floats and marching groups, including such well-known parade participants as the Suncoast Mummers Band from Bradenton, the Tampa Pipe Band, and the King Neptune Float from Sarasota.Former city councilman Gene Caffrey, one of the founders of the Friendly Sons and Daughters, will be Grand Marshal for the parade this year.Beginning at Nokomis Avenue and San Marco Street, the parade will proceed to West Venice Avenue, head west on that thoroughfare to the reviewing stand at the corner of Harbor Drive, and then to the disbanding point two blocks south on Harbor Drive.Tradition, traditionA Venice parade would not be complete without the presence of Old Betsy, a 1926 model engine that firefighters lovingly care for and roll out to please spectators several times a year, and if you can't have a real Dalmatian as mascot, there's certainly nothing wrong with a fireman disguised in a few spots and canine face mask.
