Special iy The Times FULLERTON — At the beginning of the season, the signs were not auspicious. The women who came out to play basketball at College of San Mateo were not highly recruited power house athletes. And Tom Martinez had never coached basketball before. There were difficulties at first. Martinez, a veteran football and baseball coach, ‘Was quick to point out mis takes, and criticism wasn’t well received. Some of the women bridled when Marti nez called them ‘ Bulldogs (the school nickname). Before Christmas vaca tion, the team had a 14 record. But, CSM took ‘giant strides after that, last Satreay at Cal State -Ful lerton the Bulldogs took a third-place finish In the state tournament’ by blast ing Southwestern gf Chula Vista 70-53. “We played even with Fullerton (the eventual state champion by virtue of a’ 56-42] win over Gross mont for 48 out of 40inn utes, and I thought we were no better team than Gross mont, said Martinez. “I don't think there’s any loan in the state that’s come as far as this one has. We showed we could play with anyone.”” Representatives of Southern California teams, who think Northern Califor nia programs are relatively weak, congratulated the Sulldogs on their play. No other NorCal team survived the first round. The competition was tough (he combined record of (See Page 14, Colum 31 matches. And his teammates have been supportive from the start. The senior Knight star is also appreciative of the enthusiasm and encouragement of his family. “Many adults are, down, on high school wrestling because they think it’s violent or just clowning around ke it is In the prosent that: j isn 't $0 and I'm glad my parents have a real understanding of the sport.”* His parents have paid the bill for'his traveling, 50 Mondakis spends much of his free time working for his father's shoe manufacturing company. Otherwise, when he's not on the mats in’ training or reffing bouts (which isn't too often) he enjoys volleyball, other sports, party ing and movies. As for his studies, an auto mechanics course in school has led him to hopes of pursuing such work in the future. “Think I'm going to take some time off from wrestling this summer for the first time in over two years. Besides, he smiled, I'm exhausted. If he does take a vacation, itill be a brief one. In August hell be in towa at the national training emp. Then it’s off to San Francisco State, where he'll be wrestling for the college team and training intensely until 1960 or 1984, when he hopes to make the United States Olympic Team.
