E. Cole.)Third Paper-Delton-Stage Road Group.About one-fourth of a mile east of the residence of Asa Shults in the town of Delton lies the stage road group of Indian mounds. With the weather suitable it makes a fine drive from Baraboo to visit these ancient works of pre-historic man in Sauk county.The largest mound in the group is a bird, the left wing of which has been nearly destroyed by the public highway represented by the twoPortion of Stage Road Group of Indian Mounds, g 1parallel lines. The body of the bird is well built up and the wings taper to points. The bird is about 396 feet from tip to tip, the body being 14 feet wide and two feet high. The old stage road of fifty years ago105 feet in length.Besides these there is a bird stretching out 199 feet and a round one as shown in the illustration.To the southeast of those shown on the map are two round mounds, two long ones, one shaped something like an hour-glass and the fragmentsQueer mound in the Stage Road Group.of a bear mound which has been almost destroyed by the road.One of the round mounds has been opened but by whom could not be learned. No information could be obtained as to whether anything of value was secured.The mounds north of the road are on land owned by Theodore Steel and those south of the road are on the farms of Asa Shults and Mr. Steel.ATKINSON GROUP.Situated a short distance west of the home of Mrs. M. L. Atkinson years ago was a mound which resembled some animal sprawling upon the ground. It was similar to the diagram, about fifteen rods long and with the head extending down the river. When Mrs. Atkinson came there in 1855 the effigy had not been_nBird mound in the Stage Road Group, south of the road.passed over the extremity of the head of the bird and cut it away. The road was from Milwaukee through Portage and Newport then on to LaCrosse. The bird is apparently flying from the river.Just east of the bird and but a few feet from the road is an enclosure, represented by the heavy lines on the group map and the accompanying enlarged cut. It is the only enclosure known to exist inDiagram ofEnclosure ofStage RoadGroup.Inside measurements are16}, 66}, 14}and 68} feet.Sauk county but there is one a short distance north of Kilbourn. The inside dimensions of the enclosure are 16 fc, 66 fc. 14 and 68fc feet, does not quite make a perfect rectangle. There is no break in the slight embankment and no way to enter except over the slight el evation which is about ten feet wide. There is considerable speculation as to why such a mound should be built but no 'authority has ventured an answer.As will be seen by the map theroad has nearly destroyed a long -mound which was about 108 feet in extent. Over the fence on the south side of the highway is one 185 feet long and near to it anotherdisturbed but the tooth of time has obliterated the work of the ancient builder, whose landmark should have been preserved with jealous care.At one time there was a similar mound at the home of George B.ObliteratedEffigy Mound inAtkinson J Group.McGilvranear this city, another not far from the mouthof Jackson creek in Greenfield and one south of the residence of J. M. Gross in the town of Merrimack.Just west of where the effigy was located at Mrs. Atkinson’s house, is a round mound which has been partly carried away in constructing the road.This was one of the early roads built in the county.
