The Sul Ross baseball team played both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on the six-game road trip to ‘Austin over the weekend. ‘The Lobos dropped four games to the Saint Edwards University Hilltoppers before roaring back to shut the Concordia Lutheran Stags in two games. Sul Ross pitcher Shay Morris surrendered seven runs in the third and fourth innings to give St. Eds the winning 7-3 margin. The Lobos held a 1-0 advantage after two innings. John Bowman went two for three at the plate and gave Sul Ross their only lead of the game in the second when he singled in Judd Ryan. In game two, the Hilltoppers pounded Johnny Guerrero for six runs on six hits in the first inning. Guerrero was tagged for two more runs in the third and was credited for two more after leaving the mound in the fourth. The Lobos cut the lead to 8.5 behind a second-inning two-run homer from Rod Venner and a two-RBI single from Eddie Duarte. Jeff Pannell added a solo home run in the sixth inning for the final 10-7 score. In Friday's opener, starter Jeff Price was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits in the first five innings to give the Hilltoppers an 8-0 lead. The Lobos countered with two runs off a two-RBI single from Ryan in the third. The Lobos cut the lead to 8-4 in the fifth with two more runs from George Cantu and Arturo Moreno who led off the inning with singles. Jim In the final contest, the Lobos took an early lead as St. Eds’ pitcher Brian Cenik walked in two runs in the second and served up an RBI pitch to J. Morris. Sul Ross took the lead 3-2. But Sul Ross hurler Dennis Taylor surrendered the lead on a three-run homer in the fourth by Joe Arredia. The Hilltoppers managed one more run in the fifth to take the 6-3 win. Against Concordia, Gonzales started on the mound for the Lobos and gave up only three hits in seven innings for a 2-0 shutout. The Midland right hander allowed the lead-off hitter a single in the first before closing the door on the Stags for the rest of the game. Bowman picked up the game winning hit in the second inning with a triple to right that scored Ryan. Venner followed with an insurance run, sacrificing Bowman home on a fly to left field. Gonzales is now 20 on the season with one save and a 1.98 earned run average. In the second game, the Lobos blasted a 10-run first to smother the Stags. Venner, Bowman, Duarte and catcher Scott Sulser all picked up RBIs in the first. Rowdy Brown picked up the win for the Lobos by going three innings and allowing two hits. Friday the two teams open play at 1 p.m. in another double header. Tarleton State University was first with 262 points, and Odessa College was second with 252. ‘The Sul Ross women’s team hit a string of bad luck and did not place. Both teams will take a break until April 3 when they head for Big Spring and the Howard College Rodeo.
