Schmidt, Wilkins grab top district honorsEight local boys and six girls have been named to the All-District 13-4A teams in basketball.The New Braunfels boys’ team heads the list with Coach Cliff Wilkins named Coach of the Year and post Tilo Schmidt selected as the District’s Most Valuable Player.Joining Schmidt on the first team are Victor Sierra and David Caddell.Canyon’s Todd Banks and Ronnie Rittimann were also named to the first team.Cougars David Hays and Rodney Hansen as well as New Braunfels’ Damon Millett were named as honorable mention.The girls’ all-district team was headed by Canyon’s Leona Soechtmg and Nancy Tieken, as well as Kun Wright and Heather Seay from New Braunfels.Named to the honorable mention team were Sherry Wood of Canyon and Heather Woods of New Braunfels.Schmidt led the Unicorns to the state semifinals by averaging 19.6 points a game.New Braunfels finished the season with a 19-12 record, losing to I.amesa in the semifinals in Austin.Caddell averaged 12.5 points for the Unicorns while Sierra chipped in an average 8.2 points percontest.Millett averaged 8.3 points per game for NewBraunfels.Banks led Canyon with a 14.7 points-per-gameaverage. The Cougars finished with a 15-15 record, 7-4 in district, earning them a tie for second place with FredericksburgRittimann averaged 14.2 points per game, including a team record 47 points against Luling on Jan. 11.Hays averaged 9.6 points for the Cougars while Hansen averaged 9.0 points per game.Tieken and Soechtmg led the Cougarettes to a 9-14 record, 3-7 in district play.Tieken averaged 11.2 points per game for Canyon while Soechtmg average 110.1 pointsWood averaged 7.7 points per game for the Cougarettes.Wright led New Braun fob with an 11 8 average.
