Hawley Goes Down Waterspout From the Roof, But Is Captured John F. Hawley, % years old, whom the police characterize as a ‘human fly,” stirred up things this morning for 10 minutes in the vicinity of Shawmut aw and Haven st. Sergt Jeremiah Rior dan, special officer Timothy M. Kelli her and policeman Fred Morrall arrest ed Hawley in a house into which he “climbed” in order to escape arrest. Sergi Riordan was informed that Hawley and a woman were living in a house on Shawmutav, and the officers went to the house just after roll call this morning. When Hawley saw the police men coming he guessed that they were after him. cone upstairs to the room of Hawley, they found him missing. _“He's not here now, said Dorothy Simonds, who had occupied the room with Hawley. It was known he was in the room 10 minutes before the ar rival of the police and it was equally well known he didn't leave the premises by the front or back door. Hawley climbed out through a to window of the house to the gutter and, upon his hands and knees, reached the Waterspout. He descended in a clever manner, but didn't reach the sidewalk, because he observed three women stand at the corner of Havenst and Shawmutav, who were amazed to see the man leaving the house via the waterspout. Hawley opened a window in the a d ining house and entered the room. at he had descended the waterspout about 40 feet before going into the room. People in this house heard the noise and believed there was a burglar in the house. Someone ran out to give the alarm. Instantly those standing near Haven st who saw the man ‘‘shinning’’ down the waterspout told Sergi Riordan what they had seen. The officers went to the house next door and there found Hawley, ar resting him. After placing him under arrest the police also took into custody the Si monds Woman, charging the couple with a statutory offense. Sergi Riordan said after the arrests that Hawley had considerable property on him and more was found in his room, which the police believe had been stolen. Sergi Riordan secured a continuance of the cases in court later until a week from today and both were held in substantial bail.
