In the whole history of glove fights it would, perhaps, be impossible to find a parallel for brevity with the meeting between Frank Slavin and the Coffee Cooler on Monday night. The match excited so much attention that the Central Hall, in High Holborn, was crowded to choking point, and the attendance must have numbered four thousand. In fact, the overhanging galleries looked dangerously crowded as, owing to their peculiar construction, they have none of the usual pillar supports. The great unwashed also, who had paid their half-crowns, made a great, ugly rush, as soon as the doors were open, and crowded^ these galleries, and in order to get a better view slipped their legs through the open rails and sat on the floor. Surely such a collection of dirty boots, slouch stockings, and dingy trousers was never before witnessed. They extended completely round the galleries. In the body of the hall the visitors were packed like herrings in a barrel, and on the platform at the side of the ring it would have been difficult to get in an extra man, even with a crowbar. The sight was most impressive, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed.
