* The **CuMUERt.iu”—JYetu Suction Fire :'Engine,—The new. Engine purchased fur the : town of Cumberland, was received un Tues- 1 •day last. The builder, Mr. Button, was hero m attend a trial of it, and, under his direction, the ' Canada Company (fur whom it was purchased) although totally unaccustomed to a Suction En* 1 gine, performed admirably. Whilst playing it, Ihca liriamr wore thrown through 4U0 feetuf husa and pipes oT 3 4 inch ninlo over three stmj houses at the same limn; by imo pipe it was thrown huxi- 1 xon tally 1*19£. feet—perpendicularly the height could not be ascertained, but wo understand that Mr. Button proposed to make the town a’prcsenl j of the Engine, if ho would not. with the same crew, play over a uunil if fixed at 140 feet uleva- j tion. Tho performance of the Engine gave, we I * believe, universal satisfaction; and the Council I met and unanimously voted an approval of it., We are indebted ton friend fur tho following j additional particulars:—The Engine was built j [ by Messrs. Button St Co. of .Waterford, New Yurlc. It 13 upon a now principle, invented by .the builder, and for the last nine years in use I and approved in tho North. Tho improvement J consists in carrying the water through tho Engine j .in nearly a direct line. The valves are construe- I ted la lift entirely out of the way, so as to allow 1 tho water a free and unobstructed passage. The 1 box or body is made of mahogany, in tho most substantial manner, and neatly finished. The brake is on tho piano form, at a suitable height to enable 23 men to work it with case. It is in all respects well built, and of quite handsome appearance.. . !The Suction is flexible, to admit ufiin passage | .into cisterns or other places rrquiring it to be curved, and has an air-chamber (also a new improvement of gfpat value) attached, so as to keep up a I awjhwtf stream; thus admitting the suction pipe, whilst in use, to bo still wherever placed.^ Tho Hoso are nearly double tho sue of those I in common use, thus reducing the friction materi ally. Those parts in contact with the water, aro’: made of bronte to prevent corroding. The Huso Reel is a plain, but very neat, light running and convenient article, answering the purpose very well.Tho cost of the engine and apparatus was asfollows:—Engine, S59 00; Huso Heel, 450 00;1 400 feel of (connecting screws included)at70 els. per foot, 4230 00;—Total cost, $930 00.Tho Haiti inure St Ohio Rail Road Company kindly furwarded the Engine and apparatus from Baltimore to this place free of expense.
