He was predeceased by Norma his loving wife of 39 years and by his brother Donald. He is survived by his long time partner, June Fletcher of Victoria B. C. and a sister, Margaret Bennett of Medicine Hat. Dad is going to be missed deeply by his two daughters and their families, Patti (Paul) Pharo and their children, Rachel, Megan and Michael all of Lethbridge, Carol (Jack) Houlihan and their children Andrea, Leanne and James all of St. Albert and by his sons, Bob Nicol and David Nicol and David's son, Ken, all of Surrey, B.C. He was a caring Poppa to his grandchildren and enjoyed their company so very much. He will be missed by his dear friend, Dick Marshall of Victoria. He was born in Medicine Hat on March 21, 1922 to Angus and Janet Nicol. He and his family moved to Melfort, Saskatchewan where he completed his schooling and where as a young teen he made early morning deliveries of bread and baking on his bicycle for his father’s bakery. He learned to play the bagpipe and joined the Melfort Piping Band. In 1941 Dad enlisted with the RCAF and subsequently was seconded to the Royal Air Force where he served in a small mobile radar unit in Burma until August 1945. Upon returning to Canada Dad began a banking career with CIBC that brought him to Tabor, Alberta. After marrying Norma, he started Hugh M. Nicol Insurance Agency in Tabor. Over the years Dad's love for water and boats took him further west to Castlegar B. C. then on to Victoria B.C. in 1976. Dad's humor and sense of fun were delightful to those around him. He loved dogs and in particular the family beagle, Gerry. Over the years he taught many friends and family to water ski and when moving to Victoria he completed his Power Navigation and Power Squadron courses and loved to take his “Lucky Lou and “Lou 2 on the ocean on the West Coast. Our family is particularly grateful to Dr. Kathryn Yamashita for the attentive and professional care she provided and to the wonderful staff at 11th Ave. Adapta Care who cared for his every need with such sensitivity. A private family graveside service is planned. In lieu of flowers those wishing to honor Hugh’s memory can donate to the Salvation Army oette Ave. S., Lethbridge, AB T1J 209.
