By JIM BROCK Register Staff Writer ORANGE - At least 19 union teachers in two Orange County Catholic high schools remained on picket lines Friday as a strike by lay teachers in four Southern California counties was in its second day. Nearly a third of the 59 lay teachers at Mater Dei High School, Santa Ana and one of 16 at Rosary High in Fullerton walked off the job Thursday, Catholic high schools in Orange, Los Angeles, San Ber nardino and Ventura counties. Steve Makin, strike organiz er for the United Catholic Sec ondary Teachers Association, an AFL-CIO affiliate, said ad ministrators at Mater Dei, where he teaches, have called in parents to replace teachers. But Orange diocese school superintendent Brother Do minic Berardelli said adminis trators and substitute teachers have taken over classroom area striking for collective Union leaders contend that church officials have failed to one with rulings by the Na tional Labor — woe e good contract see between teachers and the church. Church authorities say they cannot recognize the union be cause of what they believe is a moral obligation to safeguard their schools and institutions from excessive government in terference. They believe the federal board's rulings violate the traditional separation of church and state. Two years ago, 10 lay teachers at Mater Dei High School were dismissed after a brief strike. The union sued and the courts ruled that the teachers should be reinstated in their jobs and be paid for the time they were out of work. Thursday's walkout came after union members voted 90-7 Wednesday night to strike. Barry said the shooting happened so quickly that he never saw the gunmen. “I was walking across the hall and heard two shots and then the third shot hit me,” the Democratic councilman said. “It happened so fast. My chest started burning.”
