GoEtf Tourney Gels Mow NaarraeThe annual Duke Celebrity Golf Tournament, scheduled for Sunday and Monday, June 6-7, will bear a new name in its third year.From now on, the tournament will be known as the Children’s Cancer Classic, according to Dr. John Griffith, chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurology, who spoke to a group of newsmen at a press conference at the Governor’s Inn onMonday.Proceeds from the event will go toward research into the causes of cancer in children and also toward pediatric cancer treatment programs,Griffith said.“ The celebrities are only a means to an end, and that end is children, he said. “Cancer kills so many children, and this is where we want tofocus our attention.’’Griffith added that increased financial and administrative support from Liggett and Myers, Inc., of Durham has enabled tournament directors to establish a $5,000 first prize for prbfessional golfers and thereby attract some of the best young pros on the PGA tour.Actording to the physician, firm commitments for tournament participation have already been received from golfers Art Wall, Lanny Wadkins, Mike Hill, Gary Groh, Jim Dent, Ken Still, Rod Funseth, Terry Diehl and Ed Daugherty.Celebrities Perry Como, Chet Atkins, Joe Dimaggio, Jim McKay, Billy Kilmer, Evel Knievel and Ken Willard have also told thetournament committee they will play golf in June. Further confirmations are expected within the next two months.Former New York' Yankee star Whitey Ford attended the press conference with Griffith.“There are few things more important than the health of our children,” he said, “and that’s why I’m looking forward to coming out and supporting this great tournament this year.”Griffith said increased emphasis will be placed this year on making the tournament a major fund-raising success.
