“ Equal Law* and Equal Rights !VtCLARKSBURG, FRIDAY, MARCH 12,1058.The Meeting an Monday.We publish the proceedings of the Democratic meeting held on Monday last, in another column of our paper to-day. The importance of the question to be de* cided—whether the Democratic party should organize in the coming spring canvass involving the integrity of that party in this county—called together an unusually large number of the sterling Democracy of the county. The Courthouse was filled.The ball was opened by Col, Benj. Wilson, who in a few introductory remarks depicted the necessity of an or ganizalion by the Democratic party; after which he nominated the President of the meeting.Maj. Charles Lewis requesting permission to address the meeting before the quest ion was taken upon the election of a president, it was granted, and he announced himself as a candidate for Clerk of the Circuit Court, After Mr. Lewis had concludedf Capt. C. W. Smith announced himself as a candidate for Clerk of the Circuit Court,He was followed by lion. C. S. Lewis in opposition to any organization of the Democratic party. He warcnl)' express fed himself in opposition to all Conventions* and whai he termed ** party machinery, He said that they were gen eratly conducted by trick and chicanery and that he was tired of them.He was replied to by Col. Wilson, in favor of nominations to secure the success of the Democratic party. He said that the opposition was as well organized to* day as ever, and that they were only waiting for the Democratic party to become distracted by dissensions, to bring out their champions and carry off the prize, while the Democrats were engaged in quarreling among themselves.He was responded to by Mr. Lewis* when after a few remarks by Col. Wil* sou, the time for the setting of the Court having arrived, the meeting was organized by the election of its officers.The resolution was then adopted fixing Thursday, the 22d day of April next, as the time for holding primary elections at the various precincts in the county, to nominate candidates fur the several offices to be filled at the ensuing spring election.The almost universal sentiment of this, one of the largest Democratic meetings ever held in this county, was in favor of making nominations. There was but a single vote in opposition to the resolution deciding the question whether there should be nominations and fixing the lime that they should be made. The remarks of Col. Wilson were applauded, and we frequently heard him complimented for his gallant defense of the integrity of the Democratic party. His position in favor of nominations met the hearty response of the Democracy* and the able manner in which he sustained it, added to his already high reputation as a speaker and a Democrat.We congratulate the Democracy ofHarrison counly upon the success of the principle of organization. There is no greater truism than uni'ed we stand— divided we fall. The bravest army, unless disciplined, is impotent before an inferior force of well-drilled soldiers, and a jparty superior in numerical strength may be defeated and destroyed in scattering its strength upon several candidates, by the united action of the minority. The Democratic party has now resolved to hold its meetings and select its candidates, in the fairest manner which can he devised, and we hope to see a full turn out on the 22d of April next, that the candidates selected may be the choice of the whole party,
