Murdnr.—A letter from Beaufort,(S C.)informs us that much painful excitementprevails there, on account of the atrociousmurder on Friday evening last of Mr.James Ed wards, of .St. Helena Island. Hewas in the practice of walking from his ownto a neighbouring plantation, two miles distant, to give out provisions; as he did notreturn home that evening, nor during thenight, search was made for him the next ntday, and his body was found in a pond. P;with a log laid across the breast, the ekuil ctfractured, the throat cut. The pond wasnot far from a foot path through a swamp.where he must have peen waylayed, ar.d ^ from which the traces of blood upon the Jground led to the discovery of the body, ujMr. Edwards was a remarkably mild ; in- eloffensive character; but it appears from thetestimony of the negroes, he had that dayhad an altercation with his driver and struckhim; and as other circumstances have cometo light raising strong presumption of thebeentompmoned for trial.— Mercury.
