Tyrus Edwards doesn’t think Sandusky has a gang problem. He does believe there are groups of young people trying to act tough and in some cases they are dan gerous. His life and business have been turned upside down because of so called gang members. “It’s not a problem until it hap pens in their backyard,” Edwards said of local police. His urban retail store, Xclusive, 1329 Hayes Ave., has been vandal ized at least five times in less than one year. It was even shot into on at least one occasion, Edwards said. He fears for the safety of his wife and three children — and for good reason. A 2005 national gang threat assessment conducted by the U.S. Justice Department indicated gang growth in rural and suburban areas — communities where law enforcement is less likely to be a problem for gang members. But Assistant police Chief Charlie Sams said there is “no gang problem in Sandusky.” It’s more like groups of juve niles identifying themselves with common names and colors, he said. Goon Squad, Man Up and the Black Point Mafia are a few of the best known of those groups. “I don’t want to characterize that Erie County is nothing but angels because then I'd be unemployed.
