‘Tyrus Edwards, who was assaulted by five young people in his Hayes Avenue store but it’s not like we have the Crips and the Bloods out there,’ Sams said. Members of Goon Squad, Man Up and Black Point Mafia have been involved in criminal activity, however, most of those groups are ‘wannabes, not legitimate gangs, according to Sams. Vinko Kucinic, a leading expert on gang activity in the state, said people have to be more vigilant. He is a criminal intelligence supervisor for the Ohio Attorney General. “Gang activity is not immune to any city in Ohio,” Kucinic said. “Gangs are not unique to any one culture group, or anybody. It's not just an inner city, big city problem.” In June, five young men who are alleged members of Black Point Mafia assaulted Edwards in his store, he said. Sandusky police classified it as an attempted robbery. Sams said he doesn’t know if it was gang related. During that incident, Edwards was reportedly hit in the head with a gun and held at gunpoint. He managed to escape to his store’s storage room where he locked the door and waited for police to arrive. All five young men were arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident. “They all took responsibility for their part in what took place and were held accountable for their actions,’ said Cheryl Goodrum, Erie County's juvenile prosecutor. “These kids probably won't be held more than a year. If they come out and get in more trouble, that’s something that can be held over their head.” But Edwards’ troubles are not over. By reporting the incident to the police, he was labeled a “snitch,” he said. He no longer reports incidents because he doesn’t see the point. The attacks just keep happening. The police aren’t stopping it, Edwards said. @ See GANGS, Page A2
