By EILEEN MANLEY Telegram Staff Writer EAST HERKIMER Officials from Mohawk Valley Industries Inc., the group looking to buy the East Herkimer Mohawk Data Sciences (MDS) plant, are getting closer to reaching an agreement on the purchase. Robert Hingie, president of the East Herkimer MDS plant, said he was in New Jersey at MDS headquarters during the later part of last week and said he is ‘fairly positive’ they will reach an agreement. Hingre said he expects the agreement to be reached within a month, and a final agreement within 60 days after that. He said it is too early to release any of the financial details. When asked if MDS will have a future in the Mohawk Valley, the company president said ‘absolutely’. He said there are presently 1,150 people still employed at the MDS locations in the area. He said he is doubtful that any of the personel recently laid off will be called back. He said the company does not at this time plan any additional layoffs, as they have just released the figures for the upcoming layoffs which will continue until June 1. On March 1 MDS officials announced that 62 persons were to be laid off by June 1. He also said earlier that if and when the company is purchased by the local group he would like to expand the subcontract business and extend the customer base. Besides the two major buildings in the East Herkimer complex on Gros Boulevard, MDS operates Building 3, the former East Herkimer School, on Pine Grove Road in East Herkimer; facilities on Harter Street and German Street in the village of Herkimer; a manufacturing plant in the former Borden's plant in Newport; a publications plant on Old Route 5-S in the Town of Frankfort and a building on Main Street in Little Falls. In December the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) approved a bond resolution in support of financing up to $10 million in industrial revenue bonds for Mohawk Valley Industries, said IDA Vice Chairman Michael Reese. The company lost almost $46 million in a second quarter which ended at the end of October. Officials said they anticipate to do better for the fourth quarter which ends in April. These statements were made in a prepared release in December.
