It's a good bet today that no recordings of ‘The Saber Dance” are being played any where near Geibel High School And there might even be a more underway to have Basil expelled from the list of Saints. St Basil High School’s Sabers continue to be a “jinx” for Geibel in the State Parochial (PCIAA) Class ‘B’ playoffs. Last night the Sabers hopped their way from behind in the second half to hang a 60-7 setback on the Gators in the opening round of the Western Regional PCIAA—B playoffs, at the Connellsville Area High School gym. This was the third time in four years that St. Basil had ruined Geibel’s hopes of ad vancing in the state playoffs. The victory moved the Pitts burgh Diocesan Class B champions into the Western Regional final Sunday at Edinboro State College, against Elk County Christian, champions of the Kyrie Diocese. And it goes without saying that the Sabers want this win in particular. Last year St. Basil had its eye on the playoffs, but were beaten out by Elk County, who in turn lost to Geibel, as the Gators went to the state Final. Last night's win was the 22nd in 23 games and the 13th in a row for Coach Red Ryan’s Sabers. Coach Ken Misiak’s Gators closed the season with a 137 record. “We just fell apart in the second half before a well disc lined bail club,” Coach Misiak said in the locker room after wards. “We didn’t hit from the floor in the second half, and they shut off our inside game. I hadn’t seen this team play, but my assistants did and said they were a good ball-handling club, strong at the guards. They hurt us in that respect. And they not only stopped us inside the second half, our parsde shooting wasn't as good as it has been in other games ” ‘ Coach Misiak could also bel wondering if there are anymore’ Banaszak’s left in the St. Basil District. Two years ago, Hol! Banaszak, now al. Robert Morris College, was one of the leaders as St. Basil beat. Geibel in the opening playoff round. Last night, Ed’s little brother Larry helped keep the jinx going for the Sabers. He had only one point in the first half, but scored six in the third quarter, including a three-point play that put the Sabers ahead for the first time since the opening seconds of the game, then added a goal late in the quarter that gave SBHS a 8-4 lead, and Geibel was behind for g and St Basil led 1-0 an 7-40 of the firs quarter when Banaszak earned a foul shot. But Gebel went ahead at 7:06 on a layup by Bill Zawielan, and the Gators stayed out front until Bamaszak’s three-point play in the third. Geibel outgoaled St. Basil in the fires ‘half, but missed a couple of chances to break the game open, and the Labers stayed close with their ability on the foul Ine. In the end, St. Basil had only an edge of two from the four (19-17), but hit 22-for-81 on the line, to Geibel's 12-for-21. Bob Holzer (10), Ron Krayvo, (6), and Carmen Rodgers (9) helped reach the second half comeback for the Sabers, with Rodgers also being strong on the boards Rodgers positioned himself well to get crucial re bounds and ended with 10 for the game. Rodgers was also team scoring leader with 15, backed by Krayvo and Holzer, who hit 14 and 14, in that order, in reserve roles. Krayvo was especially effective as a re placement for tall Don Miller, who ran into early foul trouble and had to sit out part of the first half, Dan Petrowski, playing his final game for Gebel, scored a team high of 15 points and caught 10 rebounds. Rita Zawislan, another of Gebel’s 12 seniors, was strongest on the boards, picking off 14, most fof them in key spots for the Gators. Jim Cieslak was runner up seorer with LL. Gebel led a lihe quarter, 0-7, and at the half, 22-20. But St. Basil took over in the third, scoring one more point than in the preceding two perods combined, and went ahead 41-35. A 19-12 edge in the fourth wrapped up the win. After Banaszak’s opening foul shot, Geibel retaliated with a layup by Zawislaw, who then passed to Petrowski and Cieslak for goals, and a 1-1 lead. St. Basil got its first basket at 3:58 when Don Joyce hit from in front. Petrowski’s foul gave Geibel a 7-3 lead, then Miller and Rodgers hit from the line from SBHS before Zawislaw drove the baseline with Bob Albine's feed for a 9-4 lead, Joyce put up a rebound and Albine offset it from long range to leave Gerbel leading 11-7 at the quarter. As the second quarter got under way, Rodgers went to the line for St. Basil and hit the first of two shots. His second missed, but Krayvo was there for the tap in, and now Gerbel's lead was down to one, 11-10, Albine and Cieslak (Zawislan’s pass) hit from back of the circle to hike the lead back to five, 1 5-10, then Rodgers and Cieslak swapped two line points, with Geibel leading 1- 15, St. Basil cut the gap to one as Krayvo swished from the corner and added two free throws, before Petrowski put in two from the line to give Geibel a 19-16 lead. Rodgers put in two fouls, and Rob Czekaj offset them with a swisher from % feet (Albine’s pass) and Cieslak added a foul, for a 22-18 lead. Krayvo’s two fouls cut the gap back to two, 22-90, at the half. The scoring tempo picked up as the third quarter started, and before it ended both had scored almost as many combined as they did in the entire first half (49-34). Gerber ‘led by five at the start of the second half when Cieslak got a lay in and Petrowski a foul, for a 25-20 lead, Banaszak's foul and Krayvo’s basket cut the gap to 25-23, Czekaj scored with Zawislaw’s pass and Joyze offset it, Cieslak scored from in front with Albine’s assist and Krayvo got a corner shot, to keep the Lakers within two, 29-27 Petrowski scored from the corner with Czekaj's pass, and Gerbel led 31-27. But here SS Basil made its charge. Holzer scored from the corner, when Banaszak intercepted a Geibel pass near mid-court and drove for the layup. He was fouled as he scored, and completed the three-point play to give St Basil the lead, 32-31. Petrowski regained the lead for Geibel with a corner shot, and Holzer’s goal gave Basil the lead again, 3433. Zawislaw's free throw give Geibel a 34-34 tie, at 2:0, and that’s the last time the Gators would be close, Holzer and Banaszek scored fouls and Joyce a foul, for a 80-44 lead, and St. Bas. Wouldn't be caught again, Petrowski got a free point for Geibel, and St. Basil led 41-35 at the half as Rodgers followed up his own miss for the lap in just before the buzzer. Geibel got back within four as the fourth quarter started, Joyce hit for SBHS, and Geibel countered with a shot from the tircle by Petrowski and Czekaj's frontal shot with Albine’s pass, leaving Geibel down, 43-39, Helzer and Kraggo hit to hike the lead back to eight, 47-39. Albine’s five fouls and one by Zawislan made it 47-42 before Rodgers scored from the circle, Tom Quinlan scored with Al bine’s seed and Zawislan from the line to pull Geibel back within four, 49-45. But St. Basil broke up here with a string of eight on goals by Miller and Rodgers, and two fouls each by Holzer and Rodgers. That hiked the lead to 12 pons, 87-45, and the Sabers were home free. Petrowski's tapin closed Geibel’s scoring, and St. Basil counted two fouls by Holzer and one by Rodgers to conclude its scoring. GEIBEL—47 Albine, 2-2-4; Cieslak, 4-3— ‘Kt.
