“Thoughts on the Economic History of Black America,” a symposium, will start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in OB Ballroom. Sponsored by Omicron Delta Epsilon, honorary economics organization, the day-long program will feature national figures involved in black economics and labor Dr. Ray Marshall, chairman of the Department of Economics, University of Texas, will speak at 9:30 a.m. on “Negro Penetration of the Industrial Economy, 1930-1970. Dr. George Woolfolk, chairman of the Department of History, Prairie View AM College, will speak at 2:10p.m. on “The Plantation Economy and Cultural Change, 1865-1930, and Application of The Rostow Schema.” Dr. Marshall is co-author of “Labor in the South,” “The Negro and Organized Labor,” “The Negro Worker” and author of other works on the relationships of Negroes and unions, Dr. Woolfolk has published extensively in the Journal of Southern History, The Pacific Northwest Quarterly and other professional journals on Reconstruction Period economic history. Discussants for the morning session will be Ernest Green, Workers Defense League, Alex Fuller, United Steelworkers of America and Curtis Graves, state representative, Harris County. Dr. Harold Hyman, chairman, Department of History, Rice University and Dr. Robert Haynes, professor of history and director of the UH Afro-American Studies Program, will head the afternoon discussion. A grant from the Sperry and Hutchinson Foundation will help finance the symposium.
