NAU has been without a campus radio station for over a semester now, and no speedy change is foreseen for the quiet campus airwaves. It's not the KNAU executive staff's fault. Station manager Chris Cochran and others have done a lotof work, including lining up network affiliation. It'snot for lack of disc jockeys; there are more interestedoperators than the broadcasting schedule can handle. And it's not the fault of radio co-advisors Jim Coyleand Dave Hollenbeck.Whose fault is it? It's impossible to pin the blameon any one person, but somewhere, someone doesn’t want KNAU on the air. Not this year, anyway. They sayKNAU is an illegal station. But in meetings with administration officials, Cochran has explained that the Federal Communication Commission knew of the station’s operation in previous years, andthatth§v understood the situation. A freeze has been in effect upon new AM licenses for several years, so KNAU could get no license. Since KNAU is a college station, the FCC considers it an extralegal station, not an illegal one.Rumor around the station says that is not the actual reason for administration disapproval. Cited is thestrong vote of the station's staff to include freeform programming in their broadcast day. They feel the decision to broadcast good, though freaky, jazz and rock instead of typical AM drivel is the realBut then, this is just rumor. Or, is it?A week before Christmas break in 1967 a prankster impersonating an administration official had a KNAU disc jockey announce that school was being dismissed early. Before the mistake could be rectified, half theCould itbe that the administration is scared of KNAU's influence? *But regardless of the real reason, the administrators of this university refuse to allow an extralegal radio station on the air. At most, they want acarrier current system, where broadcasts are carried by phone lines to tiny transmitters in individual dorms. But this is costly, and it may take years before every dorm on campus is covered.Of course, there's always KAXR-FM, but it will also be off the air this semester. When it does begin operating the programming will be almost totally educational. At night Sechrist and Hi-rise dorms receive little or no radio programming. KNAU, with their new transmitter, on the open air, could eliminate this nighttime radio silence. If the station is allowed on the air.Feel like hearing a KNAU with some good, solid sounds? Drop a line to your favorite friendly administration official. Or to your friendlier KNAU executive staff. Their appointments are totally worthless without an operating KNAU.
