Last summer Stg. Pigg spent some time at Camp Custer just outside of Battle Creek, Michigan. In the following article, he has been kind enough to relate what he considered the advantages of the life of campers at this government post. The Why And Wherefore Of It. O. T. C. Summer CampsEach year this office has been approached with the question, “To be eligible for a Reserve Commission dc I have to go to camp?” In this article I shall endeavor to • explain the why and wherefore of the R. O. T. C Summer Camps. Each year throughout these Unitec States a number of Advance Course R. O, T. C. Summer Camps are con ducted. The purpose of these campi is to give practical training in military subjects which are conductor theoretically at the colleges, univer sities, and class “M S” Military Schools during preceding years. Primarily these camps are designed foi those potential Reserve Officers at tending colleges and the universities However, as the students of a class “M S” Military School are habitually in uniform and undergoing military training, the privilege has been extended to this class of school. It is a privilege to attend one of these camps, for attendance is required at one camp to be eligible for a Reserve Commission. Then, too, one in attendance receives six weeks of clean, healthy, wholesome outdoor camp life, with a selected group of college men as camp mates. The actual training on the drill field, is but a small part of the camp life. Eating, sleeping, working, and playing with this select group, and getting on with your fellowmen, so to speak, are of paramount importance in the making of men. These camps are conducted by the government at rio expense to the individual. The duration of camp is six weeks (usually from June 18th, to July 2!ith). Transportation costs to and from the home of the student to camp are borne by the government or the student can be reimbursed for this travel at the rate of five cents a mile. While at camp the student receives a monetary allowance of seventy cents per day, and board an droom is furnished without charge. All in all, the R. 0. T. C. Summer Camps amount to a well paid six-weeks’ vacation, living under ideal conditions with a selected group of young men for camp mates.
