Brought l'p a Murder MysteryIn speaking of the burning of the livery barn in our last issue we gave the names of only a portion of the owners of the establishment. Among the names omitted were Abner Shinn, J. B. Martin, Fulford and Walter Rickey. J. B. Martin, we believe, was the owner in 1862. His ’bus:h,ie, ur *ie k-i.;n-ad vout ed he erdriver was a man called Bill Howe. Bill was about 3 5 or 4 0 years old, and was inclined to be sporty. He was regarded as the best poker player in Lacon and the bigger the game the better he liked it. One day a couple of strangers came to town and remained for some time. It soon became noised about that they were gamblers and that some big games were being played nightly. The strangers and Howe were the principal players and it was reported that Hows was getting the best of them. Then suddenly one ni^ht the two strangers disappeared and nothing was ever seen or heard of them afterwards. The next morning Howe failed to show up at the livery stable to drive the ’bus, but as the proprietor knew of his irregular habits no great importance was attached to this. However, as he did not make his appearance the next day nor the next his friends became anxious and his disappearance caused more or less excitement. Finally it became gener-that the two strangers the same night that the people became con-the ’bus driver had met with foul play, but as he hadn’t a known relative in the world the excitement soon died out and within a short time the matter was nearly forgotten. A few months later a couple of boys who were hunting rabbits in a cornfield back of the place now occupied by J. P. Stout on the northern edge of town were horror-stricken when they found the dead body of a man. They flew in terror and notified John Gore, who was city marshal at that time or deputy sheriff, we don’t exactly remember which. A great crowd hurried to the spot and the remains proved to be those of Bill Howe.
