Monday, March 9, 1970 Hattiesburg AMERICAN = Page § JACKSON, Miss. (AP) About 300 delegates Sunday dis cussed a new constitution for the Mississippi Democratic par ty. The group formerly known as the loyalists, ironed out prob lems of the constitution during the session which included a taped address by Lawrence F. O’Brien, national party chair man, Bob Nelson, staff director of the commission on party struct ure and delegate selection of the National Democratic Con vention, and other state and national party officials spoke. “This is the party that is recognized by the Democratic National Committee,” Nelson said. ‘‘The national committee man and woman from this par ty have been seated by the na tional committee.” The loyalists unseated the state’s regular Democratic dele gation at the last national con vention. Rep. Robert Clark of Ebene ay zer, the only Negro in the leg islature, and Aaron Henry of Clarksdale, state NAACP pres dent, also took part in the sage sion. A group seeking a federal override of Gov. John Bell Wil liams’ veto of $5 million in Head Start funds,asked the con vention for support. The Mississippi Coalition to save Head Start, in a statement issued by Clark, urged “All member of the Democratic par ty of Mississippi to shay their support of Head Start by con tributing funds, food, and what ever other assistance possible to keep the program alive.”
