“T must be the only sports writer available in the state,”’ said the newly selected sports editor of the Denison Herald, Norma Mills. The Texan’s only woman sports staffer began writing sports be cause she wanted to do the hardest job available. She started out writ ing stories from women's intra murals and features on individual athletes around the University. Murray Forsvall, the sports edi tor of the Texan in 1953, gave Norma her first chance. Her first assignment was women's intra murals. The next year she became a night sports editor under Dick Williams. She did this for two years. Last fall she covered the Tulane game from the press box. A con troversy arose as to whether she was the first woman to be allowed in the press box. The only other contestant for the “‘first’’ title is Faye Loyd, one time an associate editor of the Texan, who received national publicity for not being allowed in the Yale stadium press box to cover a game. Nevertheless, the superstition that women should not be permitted in a press box has been broken. She spent some time recently trying to get a job as sports writer on newspapers by writing letters and interviews. ‘All I got for my efforts were timid replies and shocked looks.” Norma got the job through a notice in the Texas Daily News paper Association Bulletin with the caption “she is interested in sports.” Norma admits that she is a little scared. She remembers her first time as night sports editor when she had a fifteen-inch blank space on the sports page at midnight. The deadline was 11. But she came out of that, and she thinks that she will get by in Denison. She is going to work next week because spring training begins and she will cover that. NORMA MILLS
