Last week, along a county road near Brookston, the partially-clad body of wife, mother of children, was found. She had been shot several Sean and bled to death in a ditch, the victim of so meone who had robbed the Days Inn at Remington and then abducted her She was not the victim of the fact that our nation allows people the “right to bear arms,” as some would probably claim. She was a victim of a system that does not properly prosecute and ex ecute criminals, ironically in large part because of the cries of the same people who are against guns that we can’t be “inhuman” to the killers. It has been said by many, including by law of ficers, that it is easier to get away with murder in Indiana than it is to speed or run a red light. Some law enforcement officers have even told me that they don't want to “waste time” on anything but traffic violations, because a traffic stop is much safer, and you can be almost 100% sure that the guilty will pay something for violating the law. The prosecutors, judges, and defense attorneys who so diligently protect the criminals through their actions should have to be present during the autopsy of these victims. Then they should have to go to the husband and the children and explain to them that they no longer have a wife or mother. They should have to see the suffering that their failure to protect the innocent victims through capital punishment is causing. In his first term as Governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards was known for his liberal stance of giving pardons, and of stopping capital punishment. But when his own brother was killed by one of the peo ple that he himself had pardoned, he was a much different Governor the second time around, and the electric chair sizzled. The lack of the legal system in protecting the in nocent victims has given rise to many movies of people who have had enough, and who have fought back, such as the Death Wish series. It has also led to people such as Bernard Goetz who have, along with the movie stars Clint Eastwood and Charlies Bronson, become national heroes for standing up against crime in a system where justice is failing. They would never dare allow the citizens of this country to vote on capital punishment, because those who oppose “inhuman” treatment of the criminals are probably aware that executions would be the rule of the land. Hangings on the courthouse lawn would sure go a long way in deter ring criminals who have found that even if caught, with a good lawyer they can get away with murder. The young mother whose life was senselessly taken away last week was just one of the many senseless killings in this nation which worries more about the rights of the criminal than the vic tim. I did not know her, or her family, but my heart cries for her husband and children who have suf fered such a tremendous loss. My heart cries for the victims who are not being protected by our government.
