The Democratic candidates areliberal in their views on abortion,child care, the Equal Rights Amendment and women on staff, have varying views on civil rights issues and have conservative views on defense spending.The focus is on four civil rights issues -the Civil Rights Restoration Act, the extension of the Voting Rights Act, affirmative action in education and gay rightsbills—which were the only major separations of views among theDemocratic candidates.Richard Gephardt, Albert Gore and Paul Simon are all cosponsors of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. Gary Hart cosponsored the act in 1984 and later declined to cosponsor. UsseryKEMPRepublicancandidatesconservativeviews splitBy Shari BeardIn contrast to the Democrats, the Republican contenders are all conservative in their policies, but they are also diverse in supporting various programs of interest to w'omen.George Bush, Robert Dole, Jack Kemp and Pat Robertson basically agree on the conservative approach to abortion, child care, the Equal Rights Amendment and civil rights, but the degree of conservatism varies with each candidate.Regarding civil rights, the extension of the Voting Rights Act was only supported by Dole, and Bush voted for the act but did not support the extension of it.Both Dole and Kemp supported the Civil Rights Act of1984. Dole fails to favor the CivilRights Restoration Act, and Kemp and Bush's present views(See page 5)
