The Democratic candidates areliberal in their views on abortion,child care, the Equal Rights Amendment and women on staff, have varying views on civil rights issues and have conservative views on defense spending.The focus is on four civil rights issues -the Civil Rights Restoration Act, the extension of the Voting Rights Act, affirmative action in education and gay rightsbills—which were the only major separations of views among theDemocratic candidates.Richard Gephardt, Albert Gore and Paul Simon are all cosponsors of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. Gary Hart cosponsored the act in 1984 and later declined to cosponsor.
