By Kurt McGregor Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY — Hustle and a_ tight press—the trademark of Sky View High basketball—payed off again Saturday afternoon as the Cache Valley-based school captured third place in the state Class AA basketball tournament, as the Bobcats defeated the Highland Rams, 92-77. It was a great team effort for a crew that was totally ignored in the tournament All-State listings. All five starters placed in double figures, led by center Doug Pehrson with 27 points and Neal Mathews with 20. Forward Calvin Van Dyke and guard Dennis Alvey continued to play their hearts out, offensively and defensively, and netted 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kim Oliverson also added 12. Coach Ivan Christensen commented after the game, “You can’t ask for kids with bigger hearts than those from Cache Valley. Our kids went after them and showed real heart running the press for the third day in a row.” Christenen also noted that his team had come relaxed and ready to play the Rams—not tight as they were the day before as they lost to West in the semi finals. Sky View reached the semi finals with an upset victory over Provo in the first round and an easy win against Tooele in the second, after coming into the tournament as Region One’s third place team. Friday’s game against West is told on the inside of today’s Herald Journal sports section. Saturday Sky View came to play and earned the admiration and respect of most every writer here with their never-die desire. Holding Highland to one field goal in the first five and a half minutes of the game, Sky View broke to a 15-6 lead over the dis heartened Ram team. But Sky View, too, had its problems. Showing the strain of playing three games in as many days, the Cats lacked the sharpness and hustle they had displayed in earlier tournament games. Adding the advantage of their height to Sky View’s hurried ness, Highland scored seven straight points to close the gap to four, 17-13 with a minute to play in the quarter. By the break, it was Sky View 19, Highland 17. The Bobcats displayed balanced scoring with Van Dyke, Pehrson, Oliverson and Mathews all scoring five or more points in the first eight minutes. Sky View came out roaring in the second period, as Van Dyke and Mathews scored quickly from the field and Pehrson added a free throw to give the Bobcats a 24-17 lead with 7:26 left to play. Highland pulled back to within one point, 24-23, with 5:41 remaining before Sky View went on a rampage and outscored the Rams, 22-8 in the remaining time of the quarter. Oliverson, Mathews and Pehrson all hit from the field to make the score 30-25. Mark Fowler made it 30-27 and that was the last time the Rams were in the game. After Fowler scored for the Rams, Alvey, Oliverson, Pehrson, Mathews and Dan Petersen ran the Bobcats to a 15- point halftime advantage, 46-31. Sky View opened an 18point lead on the third quarter, and then fell subject to some sloppy passing and tenacious defense by Highland. With 1:55 left in the quarter, Highland began to close a 66-50 deficit and erased seven straight points, pulling within 12, at the three quarter mark, 70-58. The fourth quarter found the Rams pressing man-to-man and Christensen clearing his bench with the help of the officials. Highland reduced the Bobcat lead to nine, 75-66, but could get no closer with Sky View stalling and Highland pressing, the Bobcats moved to their final 15- point victory margin.
