PLAYED OFFICER.liu: tlit* Afl'uir Huh Somewhat the Appearance ol'a Holdup.About two weeks ago, several men were in town, on business and pleasure bent, and two of them strayed down lower Main street rather late at night. While on their perambulations, so they claimed, a strapping big negro showed them a thumping big pistol and what he claimed was a policeman's badge, and proceeded to “arrest** them. The men denied that they had committed any offense against the law, but the negro said they must go to jail unless they put up $10 as a bond. They promptly “put up” and were released. The men at once informed Policemen MeStraviek and Tulk of the hold-up, and gave a good description. Between the officers and the men, a fair guess was made as to the individual, and one of the victims promised to come next day and identify the negro who had impersonated an officer. From one cause or another, the witness did not return until yesterday, when an arrest was made in the afternoon by Marshal Herring, and, it is claimed, complete identificetion made. The party was taken to jail and further hearing will be had on the case. It is a serious offense against the law to “play officer.”
