by ANGELA CALLAHAN Staff Writer once their first days at the Naval Academy when they marched the yard as lowly plebes, various tours of duty have sent these six men in all directions around the globe. The one assignment that links them all is the one that brought them back to Annapolis and the familiar academy grounds as superintendent — a job that combines the office of college president with that of commander of a Navy base. Though a tenure as superintendent generally spans only three to four years of an admiral’s career, each of these men has warm feelings about his time in charge at the academy. The Capital tracked down six past superintendents to find out what they're doing now and ask them about their memories of the academy and Annapolis. @ Rear Adm. Virgil Hill left Annapolis in 1991 for Norfolk, Va., where he’s in charge of testing and evaluating equipment for the Navy. He remembers good times at the academy, but also recalls the Gwen Dreyer incident that rocked the institution during his tenure . Retired Rear Adm. Ronald F. Marryott retired two years after leaving the superintendent's post in 1988. Today he's the president and chief executive officer of a foundation based in Lexington, Va. ® . For Rear Adm. Charles Larson, now stationed in Hawaii as commander of the Pacific Fleet, being named the academy's ranking officer in 1983 was a dream come rue. But in addition to the good times, he remembers with sadness one particular midshipman. mn A prisoner of war for six years, retired Vice Adm. William Lawrence's tour as head of the academy in the late 1970s included a pleasure no other superintendent before him had known. Retired Vice Adm. William P. Mack started his Navy career as a battleship officer. But just as the age of the dreadnought passed during his career, an era at the academy ended while he was in command. A submariner of historic stature, retired Vice Adm. James Calvert spent his years at the academy reforming its basic mission — education.
