Keymmunity\ject* •*.Construction of a fitness joggingtrail was okayed this past week by Folsom-Cordova Unified School District board, to include 2 possiblefuture softball diamonds, a small greenbelt area and beautification of open field area at Blanche SprentzElementary School.The construction of these projects will be undertaken by several community and school service organizations, the FCUSD, and the City of Folsom under the direction of the Folsom Lions Club.The Lions Club has received a Neighborhood Initiated ImprovementProgram (NIIP) grant of $4500 to finance the construction of the fitness trail, installation of a drip irrigationsystem to maintain trees to be planted in the field area, and installation of afew picnic tables.Additional community input has resulted in the inclusion of a softball diamond, backstop and a greenbelt area as part of this proposal. The additional funding needed to construct the softball field will be sought fromthe community of Folsom, with the Folsom Lions Club initiating the drive with a pledge of $1000.The fitness trail and softball diamond will provide facilities for physical education programs for the students at Blanche Sprentz and will also provide recreational opportunities for children and adults in the community. Students and teachers at Blanche Sprentz have developed a tree planting and nature study area plan for the school and will be involved in thedevelopment of the area as well as using it in their curriculum.Groups that have already indicatedtheir willingness to help in the construction projects are the FolsomLions Club, the Folsom PTA, FolsomAthletic Association, Folsom Boy Scouts, Folsom Girl Scouts, FolsomGirls Softball League and FolsomJunior Women’s Club.Responsibility for maintenance of the newly constructed projects will be assumed by the FCUSD. All planningof facilities will be done with the involvement and approval of the school district to ensure that the facilities are as vandal-proof as possible and thatsprinkler systems and other facilities meet maintenance requirements.The Folsom Lions Club held a work session last week to iron out construction specifications on the new trail, a personal decathlon-style series of tests against a perfect score, modeledafter an existing such trail at Arlington Heights School in Citrus Heights.
