About the writerDr. Harriet Heusinkveld received her BA degree from Central College In 1839, and an MA degree in 1844 and a PhD in 1958 from the University of Iowa.She has been on the Central College faculty since 1944, and is professor of geography and chairman of the department of geography.In 1951 Dr. Heusinkveld served as publicity secretary for the Home Missions of The Reformed Church in America in New York City.She studied the educational facilities In Africa in 1962 and was on a Fulbright Scholarship in Taiwan to study Chinese civilisation in 1963.During me springs of 1966. 1967, and 1968, Dr. Heusinkveld led groups of Central College geography students on tours of Yucatan. In 1967 she studied the woe* of the Wycliffe Bible translators in Guatemala and Mexico, and in thq summer of 1968, Joined Cen traps study abroad program in Spain.She is a member of the Iowa Committee of the Partners tor the Alliance for Progress, and was one of the moving forces in Its success in developing a continuing program with Iowa’s sister state. Yucatan Mexico.Dr. Heusinkveld also served on the Marion County Zoning Commission which prepared the comprehensive toning plan for the county.She lias published two articles in the Church Herald. The Plight of the American Indian. and Racial Superiority — Myth or Reality, and an article entitled Separatism in Yucatan in the Professional Geographer.She is a member of the American Assn. of Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education. and the American Assn. of University
