Lord Townshend is a nephew of the Duke of Fife and also of Sir Red vers Duller, the previo-.s Marquess having married a sister of the Duke of Fife, while his own sister, Audrey, wedded; the famous Devonshire General.His Norfolk seat, Raynham Hall, whence came some of the heirlooms now in course of teing sold at Christie*s, is one of the finest in the country, and it rejoices in an extremely well-authenticated ghost.This is the apparition of Lady Dorothy Walpole, second wife of the Viscount who flourished late in the eighteenth century. Her life was an unhappy one, and1 ended in such an extreme of mental derangement that she had to be kept in duress in the upper story at Raynham'. Her appearances herald a death either in the lownshend or the Walpole family.The three estates of the Townshends, through no fault of the present Marquess, are heavily encumbered, and the sale of the Raynham heirlooms was sanctioned by a judgment of the Chancery Court last December because “ it was inconsistent with the dignity of the family that the Marquess should be left without any income from the estates.”
