It is the custom to close: tbe store between 10 and II o’clock, but the hour of 11 having gone by Mrs.St. Martin became uneasy and went to tbe store in search of her husband The doors were unlocked and all the lights were out, except one in the front window. She called her husband 'by-';. name and he answered with a groan from the'rear room of : the building. She went to hnn. and found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He was only partially conscious, but,; made known to ber that be was badly hurt. She summoned help and he was carried to tbe office of Ir. Bush and it was found that be had been shot, the ball entering the right ear and lodging in the brain. The bullet was removed and the sufferer made as comfortable as possible. Mr. St. Martin grabbed up hie revolver, thrust a couple of cartridges into it and fired at the man, who dropped the cash box and rushed upon Mr. Sl Martin, aad in tbe struggle which followed the burglar tired the fatal shot. Several bullets Struck the rear door and the wounded man’s revolver was found at his feet.'?.
