Power PlantEvacuatesWorkersEarly Tuesday,Feb.17, a Brown Root crew, doing maintenance work on the No. 2 boiler at the Texas Power Light Company Valley Steam Electric Station near Savoy in North Texas dropped a radioactive pellet from an x-ray machine which forced the evacuation of the power plant for about 51/2 hours. The crew, around 4 a.m., was radiographing a weld on the top level of the boiler at the plant. A. radioactive element in the machine dislodged at that time and fell to a lower level. It was recovered, and placed into its container around 9:30 a.m.According to Leon Loveless, TPL vice president, the Company evacuated the plant at that time as a precautionary measure. We had about 20 workers there at the time, Loveless said. The workers were evacuated just to insure they were in no danger. Radiation exposure readings have been taken since the pellet was found, and there is no danger from radiation exposure now.Loveless said that the work force either was at the plant or en-route there.Brown Root has notified the Texas Department of Health of the incident.
