Wonderful Self-Control Dis played by Marion Ball in Part of Virgin By Louis T. Hamlett Art of the highest type was re flected in the settings of “Sister Beatrice” presented by the Curtain Club at the Hancock Thursday night. Designed by Kindred McLeary and executed by McLeary, Wilson Mc Clure and Pat O’Brien, the decorated panels behind the altar of the virgin and the two beautiful stained glass arch windows on either side of the altar were so realistically and artis tically done that the audience was conveyed to a foreign land. Each panel of the stained glass windows was a perfectly worked out picture of some Biblical incident and the two windows would have graced any convent or cathedral. Williamson Good Excellent acting characterized the work of Melvin Williamson, Julia Mathews and Marion Ball in their interpretation of the roles of Belador, Sister Beatrice and the Holy Virgin respectively. As the irresistible lov er who from his boyhood has the sole aim of seducing Beatrice, William son carried out his role in a powerful and convincing manner. Double Part In the part of Sister Beatrice, Julia Mathews had a role that re quired two different types of acting. First she portrays the young nun who is torn between her duty to the vir gin and the convent and her infat uated lover for the entrancing Prince Beledor. Twenty-five years later, at the close of the play she returns to the convent as a broken old woman, filled with remorse and a realization of her sins. Miss Mathews inter preted both roles well. Virgin Role Difficult Most difficult of all was the part of the virgin, acted by Marion Ball. For two entire acts it was necessary for Miss Ball to remain motionless portraying the statute of the Holy Virgin. In the act where the virgin steps from the altar to carry on the work of Sister Beatrice who has fled with Beledor, the actress maintained a soft modulated voice that was well suited to the part. As the statute, Miss Ball revealed a marvelous self control. It appeared as though her eyelids were fixed. Constance Douglas played the part of Mother Superior and Ray Lee was the father. The six sisters were played by: Kathleen Burnet, Lyra Haisley, Jane Seiser, Bettie Lee Woolsey, Maxine Hewitt and Emily Anderson.
