The top three girls junior high school teams during the regular season will all be in action during Wednesday’s semifinal matchups of the county tournament, as Meigs Richbourg and Bruner’ Blue posted wins over first-round com petition last night at the Pryor gym. Two of the three contests were routs as the Meigs Lady Wildcats pounded Bruner Orange 56-27 and Richbourg rolled over Lewis 58-15. Bruner Blue edged out Pryor in the early game 40-36. Richbourg and Meigs now have identical 13-4 records, the Wildcats finished second in regular season competition and Richbourg third. Conference champion Ruckel drew a first round-bye and will square off against Bruner Blue Wednes day at 5:15 p.m. as semifinal action moves to the Choctawhatchee High School gym. In an earlier tilt Wednesday Richbourg duels Orange at 1:45 p.m. The first round of the boys junior high school tournament gets under way today at the Pryor gym. Meigs battles Lewis in the opener at 3:30 p.m. Pryor and Blue lock horns at 5:15 and the Ruckel-Orange tilt is set for 7. Regular season champ Richbourg drew a first round-bye. @Kelli Bray dumped in four points the final quarter and dished out two assists, while Carolyn Lynch came alive for four of her six game tallies that frame as Bruner Blue thwarted a Pryor ral ly to down the Pirates. Blue led 11-8 after the opening stanza and enjoyed a 20-14 com mand at the half But the Lady Pirates closed to within 25-24 after three quarters. “We went kind of complacent. We got a nine-point lead between halftime and midway through the third quarter,’’ said Blue coach Bruce Ravan, who had an upset on his mind as his team looked ahead to its semifinal game with top seeded Ruckel. “You'd have to say they're going to be favored, but last time we played them it was a two-point ballgame. If we stay in our game plan, we'll be able to stay with them,’’ Ravan predicted. Safina Turner collected 10 markers and 11 rebounds for the Blue Spartans’ and Bray hit the backboards for 10 caroms. (AP) Quarterback Walter Lewis brought the Memphis Showboats alive in the second half, running for two touchdowns and throwing for another to pound out a 24-14 victory over the Jacksonville Bulls in a United States Football League game Monday. Lewis, on the first series follow ing halftime, used five plays to move the Showboats 81 yards for their first score, which came on a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Greg Moser. The touchdown, which tied the score at 7-7, was set up by a 37-yard gallop down the right side by Leonard Williams. The victory gave Memphis a 2-0 season record, while the Bulls dropped to 1-1. Anna Turner got hot for 12 of her 26 points the second quarter as Richbourg broke away from a 6-6 tie to rout the Lewis Falcons. “We didn’t start hustling (until the second quarter). We were stan ding around the first quarter,” Richbourg coach Diane Dove said. But the Roadrunners put the clamps on the Falcon offense with a full-court press in the second period and went on to outscore Lewis 25-4 that period for a comfor table 31-10 halftime spread. Richbourg went on a 17-4 tear the third period and 10-1 the last stanza as the Lady Falcons ended their season 1-15, with the win coming against Bruner Orange. Ramona Dean dumped in a career-high 23 points for Meigs, which came alive in the second half to outscore Orange 32-9 to break open a tight game. Meigs shot ahead 16-4 after the opening frame, but Orange outscored Meigs 14-8 the second period to cut the gap to 24-18 at halftime. The Wildcats completely dominated the scoring the third frame 23-3 to break open the con test and take a 47-21 advantage into the final quarter. Jennifer Martin and Regina Byrd each chipped in 10 points to the Meigs attack. Kaycee Hardy poured in nine markers and col lected eight rebounds while Susan Lark and Sherri Leon tallied five apiece Orange. “It was a great team effort from our seventh graders, ’ said Meigs coach John Susko.
