Along* with its smaller ensemble, the Orchestra performs close to 300 concerts 'each year. Because pf its unique program of presenting a wide range of music to an extensive geographic ai*ea, the Syracuse Symphony was chosen last - year to tell its “success story” i to delegates from hundreds . of orchestras across the country at' the annual meeting of the American Symphony Orchestra League.In its home city, the Syracuse J Symphony presents5 eight different concert series, in addition to an extensive program for f school children. The Symphdny al§o performs annual concert series and ensemble programs in such neighboring cities as Watertown, Rome, Cortland and AuT burn. Frequent tour dates take the Orchestra and its ensembles throughout the Northeast.The 1975-76 season has been an exciting^ year for the Syracuse Symphony. Christopher Keene, one of the country’smost brilliant young conductorsf.has become the Orchestra’s Music Director. The Orchestra’s Extraordinarily versatile and talented Associate Conductor, Calvin Custer, has been appointed to the new post of Resident Conductor. And finally*? the Orchestra has moved into its New, home in the . Onondaga County Civic Center, which promises to be a musical showcase comparable to the finest concert halls in the country. *Calvin Custer is an extraordinarily versatile musician. He is a highly praised conductor,a composer-arranger and performer.In June$f 1975, Mr. Custer was appointed Resident Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony. Since his .appointment in .1966 as Assistant Conductor and in 1970 as Associate Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony,-he has beenshowing his mastery iln molding more than eighty musjdans. into one responsive instrument. Each season he conducts^many of the major orchestral cojncerts in Syracuse and other cities throughout Central and Northern New York. Among the soloists who have performed under Custer’s baton are pianists Lorin Hollander, Earl Wild, and Gina Bachauer, hornist Baity Tuck-well and jazz artists, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Mann and Ramsey Lewis. ! 'In addition, Custeris chiefconductor of the Syracuse Sum-phony Pops Orchestra, which presents a series of five cabaret-style concerts each season in Syracuse and many concerts on tdur, He also creates the scenario for, narrates and conducts the cojncerts for Tiny Tots.In the spnng of 1971, Custer created one |of the most popular of the Syracuse Symphony’s nine smaller ensembles, ttie Syracuse Symphony Rock Ensemble. This? unique group of ten Syracuse Symphony Orchestra musicians perform Custer’s original compositions as well as his updated arrangements of concert repertory.
