Grenadier coach Reesresigns head cage postBoh Rees, the only basketball coach Elk Grove has had in its four-year history, turnedin his resignation from the post to Elk Grove principal Robert Haskell Monday morning.Rees, one of the most mild-mannered coaches in the Mid-Suburban League, will remain at Elk Grove as both a mathematics teacher and coach ofGrenadier frosh-soph crosscountry team.“Just getting old, I guess, the 38-year-old Rees joked while explaining his reasons for stepping down after 14 years of coaching basketball. Actually, I decided about a month ago that I wanted toquit coaching. I just felt that I had coached long enough.GOAIthis year was to finish with a .5(H) record and in the league's first division, and I feel at thisstage of my career that wasn't particularly ambitious. I he goal should have been to win the state championship, and when I didn't make that ourgoal it was a sign I was getting old.Elk Grove’s final game under Rees was Monday night's 68-55 loss to Glenbard West intheopening round of the Wheaton North Regional. The defeat dropped the Grenadiers' record for the season to5-16.I hat gave Elk Grove a 38-48 record under Rees, who had kept the Grenadiers over the 5(H) mark for three seasons at33-32. They finished in a tietor fourth in each of their firsttwo seasons in the MSL beforedropping to last this year.oI DONT want this to sound like I'm faulting our season or anybody else,” Rees said. “I might have stepped down no matter what our record turned out to be, but Ican't really say for sure.“I'm proud of the fact that in four years we did not have asingle change on our basketball staff. That has to be just about the record. I think welotowe a lot to those four coaches-Don Schnake, LarryPeddy, Ken Grams and Ken Rundquist. I know I do.Rees graduated from Illinois State University and9started his coaching career at Balyki High School in Bath, III. He was athletic director, basketball coach. baseball coach and math teacher at Balyk i for two years after whichhe spent a year coaching at Oregon (III.) High School.IN 1959, REES came into District 214 as freshman basketball and baseball coach atArlington. After three years at Arlington, he moved to Forest View for a year as head crosscountry coach and jayvee basketball coach and then to ElkGrove, where he was also headcross-country coach until lastseason.I can't say anthing but the finest about him. Elk Groveathletic director Bob I ipsword said, I didn’t have to worry about the program at all aslong as Mr.was incharge. He handled all the details, was cooperative with everybody and was just an excellent man for the job”Tipsword said Elk Grove would open the position up for all formal applications. Hedidn't venture any gubss as to when the school would decideon Rees' successor.(2 blocPlenty c**
