By JOE MELCHOIR And another Kent State basketball season comes to a close. Akron university’s Zips put the finishing touches on the season’s activities by whipping the Flashes 76-70, making Kent’s record for the year eight wins and 14 losses. For Kent coach Bud Haerr it was the third successive losing season. Since coming here in 1951-52, Haerr has won only 37 while losing 52. This record over a four year span adds up to a lowly percentage of .415,. The only time Haerr has had a winning season was his first year, finishing with a 14-10 record. The following season his team finished 7-15, and then 8-13 last year. IN THE AKRON game the Flashes jumped to a quick 8-2 advantage but slacked off until the Zips tied it at 18-18. The score see-sawed back and forth throughout the first half, reading 46-44 in favor of Akron at the finish. DON ADEY, Akron guard, fouled out with 3:00 remaining in the first half. Mak Mannen, bent forward fouled out after 8 minutes had gone by in the second half. Don Gindles berger and Earle Smithern, also fouled out before the game was over. Before fouling out, Gindlesberger played an outstanding game on de fense. When Mannen fouled out the Flashes lost an offensive punch, and when Gindlesberger fouled out they lost their defensive standout. From the start of the second half it was again a matter of time before the Flashes were best. Akron climbed to a 66-55 advantage with 7 minutes left, and although Kent threatened mildly, the Zips dam pened every Kent rally just enough to stay ahead. KENT STATE guard Bill Fisher played one of his best games this season and led the Flash scoring attack with 16 points. However Jim Beck, the Akron player he was guarding, scored 20. Mike Harkins dropped 28 points through the hoops to lead the Zipper scoring parade. Kent player Dan Potopsky did not dress for the game because of an injury sustained in the Bowling Green game earlier in the week. THE ZIPS closed one of their best seasons in their history with a 17-5 mark. Harkins’ output gave him a total of 521 points this season, the third Akron player to his 500.
