*CITY IMPROVEMENTS.e _* How Weira Progressing- The Bulld-j In# Boom Real donees Going Up in Lar#e Numbers Minor Improvements.a The amount of building going on in e the city at present is prodigious, even ti more tbah many well-informed people '• may know. With the business blocks r reoently completed, and those now in , course of erection and to be immediately built, moot people are familiar, but we , I doubt if they have an adeqnate idea of the cost of ail these structures. Jean , ' Bernard has built two buildings, one on , First and one on Ban Fernando street; , a L. Liohtenbenrer haa also hnilt two, ad- ( ‘ joining in the form of an L; the Lan franco optntc is about to build a splendid ( i building on Court street; the elegant e Rose Block is nearly done, while the , k two-story building next the Confidence - Engine House has been occupied bnt a ■ short time. I. W. Heilman haa built a i structure on Commercial street, and is putting one up on Main street near I First. The improvements in the Jones t Block, opposite the Court House, and j the remodeling of the Allen Block are also part of the improvements, while it ia hardly neoosaary to mention the four-story Nadeau Block, the largest private building in the State outside of San Franoisco. The Lnronde Block, directly opposite, is also a handsome structure, while on Los Angeles street massive buildings have been erected for the wholesale trade. B. W. Luitweiler has bnilt a brick addition to bis place, doubling its oapaeity; M. C. Hawley A Co., of San Francisco, have erected a substantial building for their business, f while the immense Amestoy Block, rap-, idly going op across the street, will be I one of the iinast buildings in the oity.. Mr. Bernero Is erecting a 915,000 build- * r ing opposite the new depot, while L. s Boeder will soon erect a building of the i same value on Spring street adjoining the Nadean Block. Three new bn lid -I mgs are also to be at once erected on . Commercial street. A large two-story brick addition! is being bnilt to the ice faotory, while a new foundry and a steam feed mill have been established on Alameda street. This is an approximate list of the more noticeable improvements. A fair estimate of the eost of the hnildinga mentioned wonld probably be over 9500,000. In addition, a great many buildings have been repaired and improved, for the benefit of the owners and to improve the city. An estimate of the expense of this wonld be difficult to arrive at, bat it ia a considerable sum.Dwelling houses are being erected everywhere, in all sixes, styles and coat. It is difficult to walk a block without seeing new houses going np, and most of them are comfortable and ornamental. The vicinity of Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets, which was a barren pasture lees than two years ago, now odd tains nearly forty cory houses, nearly all occupied by their owners. The same may be said of East Los Angeles, and the extension of Bainsevaiu and parallel streets to the rivor. Here a small town has grown up where less than nine months ago hardly a house existed. A gentleman named Holman, from Denison, Texar, has purchased an orange grove near Washington Gardens, where he will Reside, but better than all, he haa purchased nearly twenty building lots on Olive, Pearl and adjacent streets, npon which he will at once erect fourteen houses—perhaps more— for sale or rent. Three of those for •ale are already completed at a cost of97,000 each.In minor matters the city haa improved equally. .Streets have been graded, sidewalks repaired, sewers bnilt, sidewalk signs abolished, and the obstruction by them stopped. The electric light and a grand new passenger depot, aro not among the leaet of the improvements which have taken place very reoently, or are now in progress. Still, it is necesMrily very incomplete.A Sen Francisco millionaire has purchased, during the past week, a pieoe of oity property for 915.000, to present to a friend who ia not overburdened with this world’s goods, and we hope others will follow hia excellent example.
