The Sul Ross State University Lobos opened Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball ac tion last week by blowing the Aus tin College Kangaroos away in four straight games in Sherman. The Lobos shut out the Roos in three of the four contests, taking the series by a combined total of 603. This is the first year for baseball as a TIAA sport in the his tory of the conference. The Lobos put on an awesome dis play of power against Kangaroo pitching to open the series, scoring eight runs in the first and five in the second to coast to a 19-0 win. Mike Gonzales was the winning pitcher. Opie Parsons hit his first grand slam home run of the season to pick up five RBIs, and John Bowman added a solo homer. Jeff Parnell had three hits, including a double, for two RBIs; Gus Alvarado had three RBIs; and George Cantu had two hits and two RBIs. In game No. 2, the Lobos staged a track meet” for the benefit of the Sherman team, stealing 15 bases on 15 attempts. The Friday nightcap was called after six with the score 12-0. Jeff Price posted the win. Pannell picked up two doubles in the contest for three RBIs, while Darrell Holmes had two hits for three RBIs, and Brent Harris had two hits for two RBIs. The Kan garoos finally picked up their first runs of the series in game No. 3, but the Lobos still coasted to a 14-3 win. Johnny Guerrero was the win ning pitcher. Burril Daly led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while G. Al varado had three hits and scored three runs. Pannell had two hits for two RBIs. The hapless Roos took it on the chin again Saturday in the final game as the Lobos closed the series with a 15-0 win. Donnie McNatt posted the win. Pannell provided the power with a homer, a double and a single for three RBIs. Manuel Alvarado had three hits and two RBIs, and brother Gus had two hits and two RBIs. For the series, Parnell led the team with 10 RBIs, going 10 for 13 at the plate. Holmes stole eight bases on the Kangaroos, and Par sons added five more steals. The Lobos will have their hands full this weekend as they take on Howard Payne University in con ference action at Kokernot Field in Friday and Saturday double headers. In their first year out of the Lone Star Conference, the Yellowjackets are expected to give the Lobos a run for their money in the con ference race. Game time Friday is 1 p.m., and Saturday’s action begins at noon.
