A double murder some time last Friday took the lives of Mrs. Jessie Mae (Phipps) Ice, 53, and James W. (Bink) Brown, 53, at her home on Highway 144, about a mile inside Bosque County. An anonymous telephone call received by Somervell County Sheriff Speck Strawn shortly after mid night Friday led to discov ery of the bodies. Strawn said that his caller, a man whose voice he did not re cognize, asked if he knew Jessie Mae Phipps and he replied that he did. The man continued, “I think you better get out there, I think she’s been murder ed.” He hung up. Sheriff Strawn dressed and started for the scene. As he was proceeding to ward the home he heard Game Warden Bob Rhody ltalking on his two-way radio and called him to join him at the Ice home. The two officers found the front door of the three room house locked and went to the back where they found the back door partly open. They entered and found the woman’s body lying in the bathroom with her feet extended into a small hall. Returning to their car, they radioed Bosque Coun ty Sheriff A. O. (Tiny) Carr to come to the scene and bring a justice of the peace and an ambulance. While waiting for Carr, Rhody told Strawn he thought he had seen an y other body in the dining room, and upon re-entering the house they found the body of Brown lying in the doorway between the din ing room and the kitchen. Both victims had been hit by shotgun blasts. Mrs. Ice’s right wrist and Brown’s left wrist were al most severed by the blasts, and she was shot in the upper part of the chest while he had been shot in the chest and the back of the head. Bosque County officers are being assisted in the in vestigation by Sheriff Strawn and Texas Rangers Johnny Krumnam of Waco and George Roach of Ste phenville. The dead woman’s for mer husband, Clyde Phipps ‘of Fort Worth, was taken into custody here Monday afternoon by Sheriff Strawn as he came out of the funeral home here after attending final rites for her. He was turned over to Ranger Road who took him to Waco where he un derwent lie-detector tests to determine if he knew facts pertaining to the shootings. He was return ed here later that evening and released as the tests were negative. Investigators are con sidering robbery a possible motive as billfolds belong ing to both victims are re portedly missing. It is un derstood that the Ice woman often carried a sub stantial sum of cash. Brown, a bachelor, made his home with a brother, Doy Brown in the Paluxy community in Somervell County. He was employed by a Fort Worth advertis ing sign company. Other survivors are another brother, D. J. Brown of Cleburne, and four sisters, Mrs. Esther Wilson of Houston, Mrs. Flora Hamie of Dallas and Mrs. Neva Harwell and Miss Iona Brown of Fort Worth. A native of Chalk Moun tain, funeral services were held there Sunday after noon at the Chalk Mountain Church and burial was made there. Mrs. Ice was born in Erath County. She is sur vived by a daughter, Mrs. Hershel Reynolds of Glen Rose; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Ice of Glen Rose; a sister, Mrs. Lola Davis of Anderson, Calif.; and two brothers, L. D. Ice of Stockton,, Calif., and Odell Ice of Longview. Funeral services were at the Glen Rosé Funeral Home Chapel here at 2:00 p.m. Monday with burial in Nancy Smith Cemetery.
