Mr. .Proctors paper in Belgravia, on “ Suns -in Flames,” is written with the ease and mastery of scientific details which we are wont to expect in all productions of his graceful and fertile pen. It is gratifying to learn, in reference to apprehensions asonesuns whose outbursts Mr. Proctor has recorded, through the arrival of some very large comet travelling directly towards him, that all we have hitherto learned from the stars favours the belief that, though a catastrophe of this sort may be possible, it is exceedingly unlikely. On an estimate of the probabilities—made after the manner of nsurance companies in relation to the risks of railway accidents—Mr. Proctor thinks that we may fairly consider the chance exceedingly small that during the next two thousand, or even the next twenty thousand years,Pur sun will be exposed to such a catastrophe—seeing that dur-mg the last two thousand years t or so, certainly fewer thantwenty instances'of the kind have been ^corded, while there is^ _ » * '-t ireason to believe that some even of these relate to the ^ajne atar which has blared out more than once.
