Baseball team opens season Netters meet Corpus ChristiBy PAUL LAYNEThe SMU baseball team opens its 1973 season Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a double header against St. Edwards at SMU’s Armstrong Field.The Mustangs were scheduled to open their season on Thursday and then on Friday again with the University of Dallas, but conflicts changed this. Thursday’s game was postponed because of Doc Hayes’ funeral and Friday’s game was cancelled due to rain.Coach Bob Finley will start two senior pitchers Saturday. Terry Moore, who was 4-2 last season, and lefty John Glasgow, 4-3. have been given the nod to start.SMU POSTED A school hi~h of 22 wins last season against 2G losses and finished fifth in the Southwest Conference.The Mustang tennis team who is fresh off a 7-2 win over lastyear’s NCAA Champion Trinityare participating in the Corpus Christi Tounament that started Thursday and ends Saturday.The Mustangs who are ranked fourth nationally broke Trinity’s 62 match home winning streak which began in 1967.The win also marked SMU’sTankers head for No. 17SMU began a run for its 17th Southwest Conference championship Thursday and it appears that Texas will be the only tough competition. The Longhorns have put together a strong swimming season so far, although SMU has already downed them once in Austin.Although SMU has won 18 swimming championships, 16 in succession, Texas still leads the league with 20.first tennis win over Trinity in 24 matches.The last team to defeat Trinity prior to SMU was Pan American who was coached by Don Russellsportswho retired as the Mustang coach last year to enter business in Dallas.Coach John Gardner took six players to the three day meet. George Bardie and Tim Vann, last year’s SWC doubles champions are playing number one doubles for the Mustangs and Joe Edles and Adi Kourim form the number two unit. Woody Blocher and either Clint Hufford, Richard Walthall, or Bob Amis make up the number three doubles team.
