KOTZEBUE — The William S. Levy Memorial race sponsored by the Arctic Circle Chamber of Commerce was run Sunday, Feb. 27, and first place winner was Joe Harris of Kotzebue with a time of two hours 27 minutes, 27 seconds. Others drivers who placed in the race were second, Daniel Snyder of Kotzebue, 2:28:56; third, Sam Reed, Kiana, 2:31:35; fourth, Alfred Wells, Noorvik, 2:32:25. The race, originally scheduled to be run Saturday was delayed a day by adverse weather and trail conditions. There were 16 teams entered in the race, run over a 33-mile course. Harris, the first place winner, also won a trip to Fairbanks sponsored by Wien, Alaska Air lines, and $150 in cash. Daniel Snyder’s prize was $100; third place Sam Reed, $75; and fourth place Alfred Wells, $50. Judges and timekeepers were Stephen Sampson and George Kagoona of Noorvik; Elwood Hunnicutt Sr. Rodney Lincoln, Fred Adams, Daniel Wright, and U.S. Commissioner George Fran cis, all of Kotzebue. Turn-around judges at the half-way point were Marley Lincoln and Elwood Hun nicutt Jr., of Kotzebue. In conjunction with the races there were three days of com munity activity highlighted by Eskimo dancing, a women’s 10- mile dog race, won by Winifred Dives, and numerous children’s games. A grand ball was held for all participating mushers Satur day evening. The highlight of the ball was the raffling of a Model 43 Winchester rifle. The presen tation to winner Helen Shaeffer, was made Edna Ferber, well known novelist. The Arctic Circle Chamber of Commerce plans to sponsor the William S. Levy Memorial Race again next year at about this same time.
