**■»New owner making many changesAKRON (AP) - The new owner of WAKC-TV has eliminated the station’s news department.Paxson Communications Corp., based in West Palm Beach, Fla., bought the station from ValueVision International, based in Eden Prairie, Minn. Paxson took over ownership at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.About 30 on-air and news production employees were told Wednesday afternoon their jobs had been eliminated.WAKC, the only television station in the city to carry local news, remains an ABC affiliate and carries network news.“We’ve discontinued news for the time being, and we are in the process of re-evaluating many things,” Terry Hanson, acting general manager, said Thursday. “We are excited about the future.”The UHF television station has been on the air in Akron since 1953. Its call letters used to be WAKR but were changed in 1987. Radio station WAKR in Akron is under other ownership.Hanson said programming decisions will be made soon as to what will regularly fill the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. slots that had beendevoted to local news. „Several Cleveland-based television stations maintain Akron bureaus and cover the city, which is about 45 miles south of Cleveland. /■'
