Three Southwest Missouri High Schools were eliminated in first-round action of the Missouri Class 1A and 2A State Tournaments Monday night. In a Class 2A contest at Monett, Forsyth dumped Aurora, 62-52. In a pair of Class 1A games at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Ash Grove ousted Marionville, 55-45, and Couch eliminated Springfield Green wood, 71-63, in overtime. At Monett, Forsyth’s Pan thers moved out to a 20-14 lead at the end of the opening stanza and were never seriously threatened by the Hound Dawgs of Dewey Pennell. By halftime, the winners en joyed a 38-28 spread and main tained the 10-point margin through much of the remainder of the contest. The charity stripe proved to be the big difference in the out come. Forsyth hit 12 times from the line to only four for Aurora. Leading the winning effort was Dwight Cutbirth with 20 markers. Joe Giden and Rocky Wyman added 10 and 14 points, respectively to the Panther parade. Junior forwards Greg Weatherly and Bill Peterson led Aurora with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Russ Pennell added 10. The loss ended Aurora’s season at 17-11. Forsyth moves on to the quar terfinals Wednesday night in Springfield against James. James defeated Gainesville, 60- 56, Monday night at Licking. Greenwood appeared to have things well in hand against Couch after the first period as the Bluejays enjoyed a 15-9 points spread. However, Couch matched Greenwood’s produc tion in the second and third stanzas, then outscored them 16-10 in the final period to knot the score at 57-all. Couch outscored Greenwood, 14-6, in the extra session. Center Bill Combs led Couch’s effort with 20 points, in cluding six in the overtime session. Randy Cantrell added 17 markers, while Rusty Hyde tallied 16, nine coming in the ex tra stanza. Game scoring honors went to Greenwood David Bonham with 21. Brian Renner and David Pettiford added 13 and 11, respectively. Marionville never got un tracked against Ash Grove who shaded Dadeville for the Ash Grove regional crown. The Pirates enjoyed a 14-10 first quarter lead then stretched the margin to 27-19 at the in termission. The Comets fought back to within four points in the third period, only to come out cold from that point on in the shooting game as Ash Grove led 42-28 going into the final eight minutes of play. Brian Nicholson led Ash Grove’s balanced effort with 16 points as Tyler Edwards added 12. Greg McCord led Marion ville with 17 points while Mike White added 10. Couch and Ash Grove will tangle Wednesday night in Springfield in the quarterfinals contest. Marionville ended its season at 22-4 while Greenwood finished at 24-7. The teams shared the Midwest Conference cage title this season with the Stockton Tigers.
