Trials of three defendants each on charges resulting from a $36,000 jewelry theft from a local residence and an alleged recovery of heroin from a downtown apartment building head a heavy two-week docket call of criminal cases beginning Monday morning in Judge Joe E. Kelly's 24th District Court. Milton Lewis Bowker, 28, his brother-in-law, Harold Wayne Peters, 20, and George C. McCommons, 41, all of Houston, are charged with listing the 34 items of heirloom gems includ ing necklaces, rings, earrings and watches after forcing open a safe last Aug. 26 at the Billy Welder residence in Country Club Terrace. Peters was arrested in the early part of September in Houston and the other two suspects were apprehended two weeks laters, also in Houston. Peters is also charged with burglarizing the Frank Guittard residence at 103 Spokane Drive, also in Country Club Terrace, but police said nothing was taken from the attorney's home The Welders reside at 117 Hollywood Drive where police said two of the men allegedly entered on the afternoon of Aug. 26 and after ransacking several of the rooms located the two foot square safe in a closet. Police said it was moved to the den and forced open with a pry bar. All but four of the 34 items of jewelry were recovered by a Houston police detective in the latter part of October and at the same time a charge of receiving and concealing stolen property against Edgar Cherry Gant, 39, of Houston was dismissed by the district attor ney's office at the request of the Victoria Police Department. Trial of the three men is not expected until the second week of the docket call with the possession of heroin case against Alexandro Mascarro Garcia, 24, and Erminia Garcia Villanueva, 27, both of 203 W. Constitution St., Apt. 3, and Jesse Velis Medrano, 27, of 2104 E. Juan Linn St., set to begin Monday morning. The trio was arrested during a raid by city police on Oct. 7 at the Constitution Street apartment. Police said 15 “papers” of heroin wrapped in a tin-foil covered package, were recovered after being flushed down a commode in the apart ment. Narcotics paraphernalia , also recovered, officers said. The recovered heroin amounted to a little less than an ounce. Both the jewelry theft and heroin cases are scheduled to be tried before juries with jury trials likely in other cases. Defendants in other cases include Robert L. (Bob) Bebee, 27, of 303 Mossy Oaks, accused of swindling First Victoria Na tional Bank out of $3,690 last June 12. Bebee, owner of Water Boy of Victoria, is charged with obtaining the money by presenting a letter to M. M Gohike, an assistant vice president, in which he allegedly represented that he was the owner of certain contract rights with Melvin Brannan.
