.Carbon “was , one, step away ‘roma berth in the Class A Journey,and Lehi and American Fork ended in a tie for first place in‘Region 7 competition in the ‘aftermath of Friday’s prep play in the Central Utah area. Carbon’s Dinosaurs raced to a 77-58 victory over’ Payson Fri’ day. night to take over third place in the Region 5 race with one more round to go. The first three teams in Region 5 go to the tourney and league-leading Provo and second-place Spring ville have already qualified for the state meet. ~~ Carbon can wrap up third place and a berth in the tour ney by defeating Orem High at Orem Wednesday. Payson’s Lions can keep their hopes alive if they can beat Spanish Fork and if Orem can upset Carbon. Finally Down Tigers In Friday night’s other Region 1 game, Springville got a scare from Orem before finally down ing the Tigers, 69-64, at Orem, Region 7 play found Lehi wal loping St. Francis, 79-26, and American Fork sweeping past Tintic, 94-31. Payson’s Lions gave Carbon a tough struggle in the first quar ter, which ended with the Dinos out in front 13-12. But then the Dinos reved up their at tack and led 36-27 at halftime and 56-40 at the three-quarters mark. After that Payson was never n the game again. Johnny Ellington sparked the Carlton attack with 32 points, followed by Barton with 20 and Christensen with 10. Neff paced Payson with 12. Orem In Lead Orem was ahead of Spring ville 53-47 going into the fourth period, but the Red Devils came roaring back in the stretch to pull the game out of the fire. The game was close all the way with Springville leading 16- 15 at the end of the first quar ter and Orem ahead, 36-33 at the half. Roger Reid paced the Spring ville quintet with 23 points, fol lowed by Ron Bird with 15 and, Thorpe with 10. Allphin topped Orem with 22] points, followed by Delaney with], 18 and Herbert with 15. _ Marks Lehi Smith sparked Lehi’s Pioneers to their easy win over St. Fran cis by scoring 15, followed by}. Rymer with 12 and Cooper with 11, Johnny Briskey of the Pad res was the game’s top scorer with 16 points. ‘ American Fork raced to a 22-5 ‘first quarter lead and was never in serious trouble at any time in its game with Tintic. Wilson and Burgess led the victory parade with 17 points each, followed by Greenwood with 12 and Prisbrey with 10, Sorensen was Tintic’s top scorer with 14 points. American Fork and Lehi, as co-champions, and Pleasant Grove will represent Region 7 in the Class B. Tourney.
