BEATS LIGHTNING. o-New York news of January 26 says that a new switch so fast it stops lightning from shutting off your lights was described to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers there the previous day. When lightning hits the power line the switch opens the cidcuit to let the celestial “juice drain off, and closes it again within three-tenths of a second. The actual time that power is off is one-sixth of a second. This is enough to cause lights barely to blink, but not to stop any kind of machinery. It causes the red ball” to show on electric clocks, but when the householder resets the clock, the loss is too small to detect. The new switch was reported by Philip Sporn and C. A. Muller of the American Gas Electric Service Corporation, New York City. They announced the results from the firs!Bract ical tests, in Ohio, Indiana andlichigan, where 15 lightning strokes hit. The lines are from 17 to 350 miles long and are operated by the Ohio Power Company, Indiana and Michigan Electric Company, and Northern Indiana Public Service Co.The switch, with aid of springs, lakes one tenth of * second to open. The closing is done by a heavy spring. After closing, an automatic motor resets this spring. The switch is so fast it has stopped lightning completely from one common trouble, which is flashing from one main line to another close alongside. This double circuit Aashover occurs when the lightning cannot escape fast enough from the first line it strikes.
